Donors tour Chatham-Savannah Authority for the Homeless's Tiny House project

Savannah Morning News - 12/14/2018

Dec. 14--Hundreds of donors to the Chatham-Savannah Authority for the Homeless'sTiny House project gathered Thursday to tour the first of the soon-to-be 24-home community.

The three and one-half-acre tract on Dundee Street in East Savannah aims to house homeless veterans. The Tiny Houses are meant to be small, but affordable, with units renting for $240 a month including utilities. Each will feature a kitchenette, shower, bed, toilet, storage, and heating and air conditioning.

On Thursday, the group was able to tour one completed unit.

Originally, The Cove on Dundee was set to house the first 24 residents by the end of the year, but Chatham-Savannah Authority for the Homeless Executive Director Cindy Murphy Kelly said that date has been pushed to around March 2019.

"We have been heavily hampered by rain. We've been building components off-site, so we have quite a pile of components that we have just started hauling to the site this week," Kelly said. "They're going to go up pretty quickly, though we are expecting rain in the next couple of days."

One of the future residents, David Lemanski, was mingling with donors and members of the Homeless Authority on Thursday.

David served as an Army Ranger at Fort Stewart in the 1980s. When he left the Army, he suffered from PTSD, went through a divorce, and has been homeless for the last 11 years.

He lives in a small camp near the Amtrak station with two other veterans. He said he's looking forward to moving into his new tiny home.

"This is a new chapter in the story," Lemanski said. "I truly believe it'll be a good chapter."
